What is nail fungus?

Affecting 10% of the population, fungal nails or onychomycosis (OM) is a persistent fungal infection of the nail bed and nail plate. Signs of fungal nail infection include yellow discolouration of the nails, rougher ridges and crumbling of the nail. Fungal nail infections are caused by fungal spores finding their way underneath the nail. The fungus feeds on the keratin within your nail and thrives in the moist conditions that exist under the nail.

Treating it

One of the frustrations people experience is poor or incomplete results with topical treatments. Outside of topical creams and ointments, the only option was a long course of oral antifungals which meant taking a tablet for at least 3 months and some possible side effects. For the best results, we recommend Lunula nail laser treatment.

How we treat fungal nails?

Treatment Process

The Lunula Laser is the easy and convenient treatment that helps turn your discolored and disfigured nails into clearer, healthier looking nails.

At My FootDr podiatry centres, we have implemented a comprehensive assessment plan to ensure that the treatment really gets to the cause of the problem. This includes:

  • An initial assessment to determine if there is a fungal nail infection present
  • A review of the cause of the infection
  • A treatment plan outlining the most appropriate management
  • Measures to ensure that once the infection is eradicated that the chances for re-infection are minimised

Fungal Nail can be hard to treat, so it’s important that you see a podiatrist for treatment. Lunula laser treatment easily penetrates the nail onto the site of infection beneath the nail plate. The fungal cells are destroyed before your healthy cells are damaged meaning laser therapy is pain-free. All you will feel is a cool sensation on the nail and nail bed.

It’s important to note that nails have no living cells, even healthy looking nails. This is an important point as a dead cell has no potential to fight off an infection and heal. This means that once the laser is applied and fungal cells have been destroyed, visible signs of the nail infection will remain. As the healthy nail grows out, however, the damaged/infected nail will slowly disappear. This will take several months so it’s important to remain patient.

The laser treatment does not require any local anaesthesia and there is no recovery period. It’s a simple walk in, walk out the procedure with no side effects and no visible harm to the nail or skin.

Multisite clinical trials completed to date indicate success rates of at least 71%, although many practitioners who minimised cross-infection risks have reported success rates in excess of 88% making it the most effective treatment on the market.

Treatment Plan & Laser Therapy

The number of laser therapy sessions that those with fungal nail infections are suggested depends on factors such as the severity of the fungal infection in a patient, their age, and the number of nails infected.
